She's talented, young and artistic, and is now helping to shape the face of Starbucks. Lauren Watson's artwork will adorn Starbucks mugs.
Howick’s Lauren Watson is one of two winners of the national Starbucks/Youthline Art Competition. Her winning designs will be printed on mugs and tumblers and sold at the company’s shops throughout the country, with a percentage of the profits going directly to Youthline.

On Tuesday Lauren and fellow winner, Taryn Bell of Sacred Heart in Lower Hutt, were in Wellington to meet with Starbucks and Youthline representatives. Each won $500 and $500 for their respective schools.
Born and bred in the eastern suburbs, Lauren (17) has a strong interest in art. The Year 13 Howick College student studies photography, design, digital design, print-making and media studies.
Lauren said she and several digital design classmates entered the competition under the encouragement of teacher Jeff Sarah. “I was really surprised I won, I almost didn’t enter.” The competition aimed to encourage talent and creativity in young people and was run by Starbucks to assist Youthline. Youthline is a volunteer telephone support service aimed helping youth, predominantly between 12 and 25 years. Lauren’s designs have a Pacific theme and one features five people holding hands to signify unity. “My designs include reds and warm colours which are used to create the feeling of warmth, happiness and passion. Blue has been used because it is a calming colour and creates the feeling of purity and naturalness,” said Lauren. Next year she wants to study a Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design at Waikato University and hopes this win will stand her in good stead for her career in the design industry. “I did it to gain experience, it’s something that I can add to my CV.”
