Zhongshan, previously known as Xiangshan is a prefecture-level city in the south of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province, China.
Zhongshan is one of a very few cities in China named after a person. It is named after Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who is known in Mandarin as Sun Zhongshan. Sun, the founding father of the Republic of China who is also regarded positively by the People's Republic, was born in Cuiheng village in Nanlang Township of what was then Xiangshan County. In 1925, the year after his death, Xiangshan was renamed Zhongshan in his honor. The main ethnic group in Zhongshan is Han Chinese, and the dominant spoken language is Cantonese. Zhongshan is a city of numerous leafy parks, wide boulevards and various monuments such as: Sunwen Road West in Old Town, a pedestrian mall lined with dozens of restored buildings from the colonial period in treaty port style; Seven Story Fufeng Pagoda, built in 1608, which is visible from all over the city; Sun Yat-sen memorial pavilion stands near the pagoda or Sunwen Memorial Park, where the largest bronze sculpture of Sun Yat-sen in the world can be found.
