Chengdu(成都) formerly transliterated Chengtu, is the capital of Sichuan province in Southwest China. It holds sub-provincial administrative status. Chengdu is the original city name which dates back to its founding over 2000 years ago. City has many nicknames: The City of Hibiscus: Róngchéng; The Brocade City: Jinchéng; The Turtle City: Guichéng. All the se based on ancient legends. Chengdu is the only major city in China that has never changed its location or name for more than 2000 years.

Famous for its Giant Panda Research Base - a non-profit research and breeding facility for giant pandas and other rare animals. Chengdu Panda Base was founded in 1987. It started with 6 giant pandas that were rescued from the wild. By 2008, it had 124 panda births, and the captive panda population has grown to 83. Its stated goal is to "be a world-class research facility, conservation education center, and international educational tourism destination.

Panda - also known as the giant panda to distinguish the unrelated red panda, is a bear native to central-western and south western China. It is easily recognized by its large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. Its diet is 99% bamboo.
The giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central China, mainly in Sichuan province. As a result of farming, deforestation and other development, the panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived. The panda is a conservation reliant endangered species. A 2007 report shows 239 pandas living in captivity inside China and another 27 outside the country. Wild population estimates vary; one estimate shows that there are about 3,000 individuals living in the wild.
