Karlsruhe (formerly Carlsruhe) is the second-largest city in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in southwest Germany, near the Franco-German border. It has been speculated that Karlsruhe was a model for Washington, D.C. as both cities have a centre from which the streets radiate outward. The town is now the seat of two of the highest courts in Germany, the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice.
Lady Justice (Latin: Iustitia, the Roman goddess of Justice, who is equivalent to the Greek goddesses Themis and Dike) is an allegorical personification of the moral force in judicial systems. Since Roman times, Iustitia has frequently been depicted carrying scales and a sword, and wearing a blindfold. Her modern iconography frequently adorns courthouses and courtrooms, and conflates the attributes of several goddesses who embodied Right Rule for Greeks and Romans, blending Roman blindfolded Fortuna (fate) with Hellenistic Greek Tyche (luck), and sword-carrying Nemesis (vengeance).
This mug has been first released in February 2014.
Fact that Karlsruhe is now the seat of two of the highest courts in Germany may be the reason to show Lady Justice Sculpture in front of the mug, though the statue is standing in front of the Romer in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.... Creative :)
