Altough less than one tenth the size of Vienna, Salzburg has almost as many attractions...(says a Salzburger).

Founded back in ancient Roman times, the city of 150.000 inhabitants is located at the northern edge of the Central Alps. You can't go far without having spectacular mountain scenery in your view. A typical Salzburger is a dedicated hiker, biker, skier and mountaineer. Major ski resorts are within only 40 minutes driving. The city's most famous son is of course Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Born in 1756, he was a child prodigy who composed his first superb pieces of classical music at the age of only 5. Nowadays, the city is full of Mozart memorabila - and tourists enjoying a stroll in the medieval old town. The Salzburg Festival is among the largest and most renowned festivals for classical music and theater in the world. Established in 1920, it draws masses of music connaisseurs to Salzburg each summer. They can choose between 200+ world class acts. The world famous music film "The Sound of Music" was shot in Salzburg in 1965 based on the Broadway musical of 1959. It became an instant hit that reached an audience of over 1.2 billion viewers ever since. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the film locations every year. Funny enough, the film is extremely popular all over the world - except for Austria. Barely any local knows about it.

Probably not that well known outside of Austria is the fact that the Energy Drink giant Red Bull is also based in Salzburg. The company was founded in 1984. After humble beginnings, Red Bull developed into a marketing powerhouse that invented the product category "Energy Drink" and sold over 6 billion cans in 2013. A fun fact is that one would find expenses for 2 Formula One racing teams and a global network of professional soccer teams (Salzburg/Austria, New York/US, Leipzig/Germany, Campinas/Brazil) under "other marketing expenses" in Red Bull's balance sheet.

And, last but not least, Salzburg is the home of a website dedicated to Starbucks Mugs collectors called "FredOrange"....

Salzburger Dom - Salzburg Cathedral is a seventeenth-century Baroque cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salzburg in the city of Salzburg, Austria, dedicated to Saint Rupert and Saint Vergilius. Founded by Saint Rupert in 774 on the remnants of a Roman town, the cathedral was rebuilt in 1181 after a fire. In the seventeenth century, the cathedral was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style under Prince-Bishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau to its present appearance. Salzburg Cathedral still contains the baptismal font in which composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptized.
